The sitcom about a group of single New Yorkers also had snappy writing and funny stories — no easy task — and perfect casting, crucial for a fairly traditional, studio audience sitcom whose big structural risk was an ensemble with six equals and no lead. “You can’t take out of the equation these six incredible actors,” Bright says.
The characters those actors brought to life explain why fans remain faithful after 10 seasons and are waiting expectantly for the finale. They want to know how their Friends will end up. In other words, what about Ross and Rachel?
“These characters have become more than just characters. There are dramas where people feel that way about characters, more than in comedies: ‘What’s going to happen? Did you see so-and-so …?’ ” Kauffman says. “People have invested in our characters that way.”

Would viewers embrace them anew if Friends premiered in today’s changed TV environment?
“Gosh, I hope so,” she says, pondering the alternative. “That’s a scary thought.”
That is so sad. This is one sitcom I have followed since high school.
Good thing I have copied their episodes in vcds. I intend to buy DVDs soon.
