Being Batman

Here goes…

NEW YORK - Dark clouds have gathered over Gotham. Crime is rampant, despair is widespread and no one is safe. Who will rescue the metropolis from itself, fight the forces of evil and save the good people of the city?

Why don’t you do it?

AJ: So you want to be a Batman? Here’s your expenses…

The Training
Cost: $30,000

You’d better be ready to defend yourself if you plan to take on all the thugs and super-villains that call Gotham home.

In the new movie, young Bruce Wayne goes to Tibet on the mother of all study-abroad trips and ends up learning the martial arts from a group of vigilante ninjas called the League of Shadows. But similar training is available to those not lucky enough to get plucked out of obscurity by Liam Neeson.

A good place to start would be an internship at the birthplace of kung fu, the Shaolin Temple in Henan, China. One month of training at the prestigious Tagou school costs about $740, including a private room and training with a personal coach. It’ll take a while to get good enough to stop the Joker’s worst thugs, though, so count on spending at least three years and about 30 grand for the trip.

Employee Evaluation

Be sure to read through to the bottom…

  1. Bob Smith, my assistant programmer, can always be found
  2. hard at work in his cubicle. Bob works independently, without
  3. wasting company time talking to colleagues. Bob never
  4. thinks twice about assisting fellow employees, and he always
  5. finishes given assignments on time. Often he takes extended
  6. measures to complete his work, sometimes skipping coffee
  7. breaks. Bob is a dedicated individual who has absolutely no
  8. vanity in spite of his high accomplishments and profound
  9. knowledge in his field. I firmly believe that Bob can be
  10. classed as a high-caliber employee, the type which cannot be
  11. dispensed with. Consequently, I duly recommend that Bob be
  12. promoted to executive management, and a proposal will be
  13. executed as soon as possible.

Addendum:
That idiot was standing over my shoulder while I wrote the report sent to you earlier today. Kindly re-read only the odd numbered lines.

PacMan loses to Morales

Didn’t even bother to watch the whole fight on the local channel.

News just spread too quickly. People with cable or internet or even radio access got hold of the news first. May unanimous decision na, last round pa lang nung undercard fight bago sina Pacquiao. Bad trip talaga itong channel 9. Kaya nakakawalang ganang manuod ng ‘live’ telecast sa local channel. If Pacquio had one, I definitely would like to know how he beat the crap out of Morales. Sayang talaga.

I was at Pacita that time. I knew that even if Channel 9 advertised the fight will start at 10am, it would really start at about 12-1pm. But to air the fight at 2:30?! Man, that was pushing the limit. Pen and I alternated switching the TV from Ocean’s 12 to Channel 9 hoping not to miss the first bell. We finished Ocean’s 12 and still the fight is not on. Played Tekken5 while waiting for the figth and by that time, news is already spreading. I got the news from Pen’s dad who is listening over the radio. 12 rounds, PacMan cuts his head at the 5th round from a head butt and a unanimous decision with 115-113 score from each judge favoring Morales.

Nice guys
Tuesday 8 February 2005 @ 8:23 am

Picked this somewhere over the net. Read on…

This is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point.

This is for the guys who escort their drunk, bewildered female friends back from parties and never take advantage once they’re at her door, for the guys who accompany girls to bars as buffers against the rest of the creepy male population, for the guys who know a girl is fishing for compliments but give them out anyway, for the guys who always play by the rules in a game where the rules favor cheaters, for the guys who are accredited as boyfriend material but somehow don’t end up being boyfriends, for all the nice guys who are overlooked, underestimated, and unappreciated, for all the nice guys who are manipulated, misled, and unjustly abandoned, this is for you.

This is for that time she left 40 urgent messages on your cell phone, and when you called her back, she spent three hours painstakingly dissecting two sentences her boyfriend said to her over dinner. And even though you thought her boyfriend was a chump and a jerk, you assured her that it was all ok and she shouldn’t worry about it. This is for that time she interrupted the best killing spree you’d ever orchestrated in GTA3 to rant about a rumor that romantically linked her and the guy she thinks is the most repulsive person in the world. And even though you thought it was immature and you had nothing against the guy, you paused the game for two hours and helped her concoct a counter-rumor to spread around the floor. This is also for that time she didn’t have a date, so after numerous vows that there was nothing “serious” between the two of you, she dragged you to a party where you knew nobody, the beer was awful, and she flirted shamelessly with you, justifying each fit of reckless teasing by announcing to everyone: “oh, but we’re just friends!” And even though you were invited purely as a symbolic warm body for her ego, you went anyways. Because you’re nice like that.

The nice guys don’t often get credit where credit is due. And perhaps more disturbing, the nice guys don’t seem to get laid as often as they should. And I wish I could logically explain this trend, but I can’t. From what I have observed on campus and what I have learned from talking to friends at other schools and in the workplace, the only conclusion I can form is that many girls are just illogical, manipulative bitches. Many of them claim they just want to date a nice guy, but when presented with such a specimen, they say irrational, confusing things such as “oh, he’s too nice to date” or “he would be a good boyfriend but he’s not for me” or “he already puts up with so much from me, I couldn’t possibly ask him out!” or the most frustrating of all: “no, it would ruin our friendship.” Yet, they continue to lament the lack of datable men in the world, and they expect their too-nice-to-date male friends to sympathize and apologize for the men that are jerks. Sorry, guys, girls like that are beyond my ability to fathom. I can’t figure out why the connection breaks down between what they say (I want a nice guy!) and what they do (I’m going to sleep with this complete ass now!). But one thing I can do, is say that the nice-guy-finishes-last phenomenon doesn’t last forever. There are definitely many girls who grow out of that train of thought and realize they should be dating the nice guys, not taking them for granted. The tricky part is finding those girls, and even trickier, finding the ones that are single.

So, until those girls are found, I propose a toast to all the nice guys. You know who you are, and I know you’re sick of hearing yourself described as ubiquitously nice. But the truth of the matter is, the world needs your patience in the department store, your holding open of doors, your party escorting services, your propensity to be a sucker for a pretty smile. For all the crazy, inane, absurd things you tolerate, for all the situations where you are the faceless, nameless hero, my accolades, my acknowledgement, and my gratitude go out to you. You do have credibility in this society, and your well deserved vindication is coming.

Jobs

I want to write something about jobs.

I have these mixed feelings about jobs in general. Some of us are really lucky to land on one of those dream jobs while most of us are struggling with their jobs. I feel the pain of those exerting tremendous effort just to be able to last the day.

It’s a classic Life isn’t fair line. And then you rebut, who said life was fair?

My philosophy towards work is kung saan ka masaya, dun ka; pag di ka na masaya, mag-resign. Though I resigned from UP not because I was not happy there but there are other demands that I can’t make (to have a PhD). Well, I guess I can get away with hindi ako masaya sa patakaran nila. ü

Seriously, who would want to work for someplace where you are not happy in the first place? You have to maintain a positive outlook when you start your day. Just a little excitement that you will go to work will help you a lot. If you can’t make these little servings, chances are the work is not for you.

What if indeed you like your job? You are one of those who landed a dream job, well, maybe not THE dream job but a fairly descent one. Then you were re-trenched. That sucks big time. Man, that sucks big time.

All I can do is pray.

I pray that everyone of us will land that job that will take us towards a great future.

I pray that we will be blessed with oppurtunities for a brighter future.

PostIt and me

Gotta admit I’m a Post-It guy (I’m shaking my head in disbelief while typing this blog).

It really didn’t occur to me that I’m fond of this cute little yellow stickies until last December when my teammates pulled a prank on me during my bday.

I remember arriving at the office earlier that usual so I can start the day with a little less pressure to start working immediately. My routine when I arrive at the office is turn on the monitor (I never shutdown the PC during weekdays), ctrl+alt+del to type my pwd (my workstation is just locked from the previous day), hit win+r to telnet and time_in, lastly get 1 mug of hot chocolate.

During that day, I saw my monitor filled with Post-it notes. Cute little square yellow and white papers literally covered my whole PC screen. My initial reaction was, “WTF?! Who the hell did this?! How am I suppose to login and time in?”. Then I saw the notes written all over saying “Happy Bday etc. etc.”. That erased the grumpy face I had. After careful thinking, I removed them one by one and set them aside so I can read them later on. I was thinking of logging first before anything else. Hehe. I was thinking of waiting for the other guys to arrive so we can have a good laugh and take pictures of it (with me of course) but I just have to use my PC and check my mails - sayang yung oras eh.

Here’s a picture of those Post-it notes. I had them stuck in my little cubbyhole partition at the office.

I still use these Post-it notes. I have in fact 3 stickies in my office PC. I attempted to use a postit software but it’s not the same with the real thing. And yes, it’s already uninstalled.

Well, will this qualify me for a peculiar award or something?
:hihi:

KungFu Hustle

Upon the recommendation of my friends, Pen and me made time to watch this movie. And yep, the movie was great. Sayang at nakatulog si Pen - not because the movie bored her but she was very tired yesterday so I just let her sleep inside the theater while I continued watching the movie.

It was like watching DragonBallZ and Matrix Revolutions with the classing KungFu styles. I liked this better than Shaolin Soccer though it must be the crappy vcd copy that I have that I wasn’t able to appreciate Shaolin Soccer. If I do find a DVD copy of this movie, I will gladly send a copy over there at California and Minnesota if you two guys would want a copy.

 Mga magkano ba ang aabutin ng pagsend ng cd dyan sa US?

Free RSS Readers

I haven’t tried a standalone feed reader yet. As said from previous posts, I have a plug-in in Outlook and the other is alreay a feature in Thunderbird. What’s extra nice in RSS/Atom feeds, you get updated information once it is available. No more time wasted visiting a site when there is no update available.

My next task would be to fix my RSS feed for this site.
